AATD is based in Rotterdam and is working with the cultural and material notions of building. It seeks to create new organisation principles, relationships and processes as a basis for architecture.

The practice is founded in 2017 by Tomas Dirrix after winning the Meesterproef competition for emerging Belgian and Dutch architects, organised by the Vlaams Bouwmeester. In 2018 Atelier Tomas Dirrix was selected for the talent development grant from the Creative Industries Funds with the project ‘Possible Structures’ through which it researches and designs architectural structures both as a material or spatial configuration and as a constructive idea.

Through various contributions to publications such as Building upon Building and Architecture with Architects II, participations in exhibitions at Het Nieuwe Instituut and Marres House of Contemporary Culture it’s projects are part of an emerging international conversation on architecture. In 2018 Atelier Tomas Dirrix was awarded the Unfair Architect Award for the design of the biennial exhibition with works of 40 young and promising artists.

From an independent base through which imaginative ways on the making of buildings are explored, Atelier Tomas Dirrix actively seeks for collaborations, methods of realisation and forms of application with design partners such as Diederendirrix architects, and as a member of the design and research collective Envisions.

We work with cultural institutions, businesses and private parties like Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Roodkapje Galerie, Rotterdam, Unfair, Amsterdam, Horst Arts and Music, Brussels
